The roof was leaking once more. Dad stopped coming dwelling, and Mother lined the ground with bowls and pots and pans and different dishes in all places the water was dripping. As a result of the water dripped a lot, Mother received up within the evening to empty the containers and returned them to the identical locations. We at all times heard when she received up within the evening, and we knew what she was doing as quickly as she put the dishes again and the drops of water sounded completely different, falling into the now empty containers. The worst was when the roof leaked over our beds. We needed to transfer them wherever and nevertheless simply so the water wouldn’t drip on them. Mother stated, My God, what have I finished incorrect? At any time when we heard Mother crying at evening, we knew Dad had come dwelling. Mother stated, At the very least don’t wake the children. Are you able to promise? Dad pretended to not hear her and stated, Convention. Ladies to the opposite room. So we needed to stand up and go over to the desk, and Mother took Dina to the opposite room. Dad sat on the desk and cracked his knuckles. Ekrem, Edo, and I sat in silence, ready for Dad to speak. Dad stated, Lest you suppose I’m drunk, Ekrem will lead the assembly. Ekrem requested what was the agenda, despite the fact that it was nighttime, after which Dad took the ground and spoke about his life and communism. You boys will dwell to the yr 2000. By then communism should prevail, you bought that? We received that despite the fact that we had been sleepy. Have you ever learn Germinal, he requested me, and I lied that I had. He advised us how he’d gone to high school with nanule on his ft and the way we had no proper to ask for something past that, despite the fact that we didn’t ask for something. Whereas speaking, Dad walked across the room, after which he sat down once more on the desk or on the sofa. When he waved a hand from the sofa, we knew the assembly was over. To those conferences, he at all times introduced new phrases. At all times a special one. One evening he stored saying pretermit, others, completely or withdrawal. We didn’t know what these phrases meant, however we used them to inform one convention from one other. Ekrem stated, You understand, that evening he stored sayin’ competent. I stated, I do know.
Mother was crying within the different room, however you would barely hear it as a result of she held a pillow over her face. Dina requested, Why are you crying, Mother? We’ll be glad someday, too. Everybody needs to be glad someday. Mother stated, When the soil covers me, that’s after I’ll be glad.
