Learn how to Draw a Secret
Author/artist: Cindy Chang
Allida/HarperCollins; $24.99
Writer’s age ranking: 8-12 years
Twelve-year-old Cindy looks as if a reasonably regular, happy-go-lucky child, one with a particular aptitude for artwork. However her household has a secret, one she has been retaining from even her greatest pals in school for 4 years now: Her father left her household and moved again to Taiwan, presumably for work.
Cindy’s strict mom insists she and her sisters preserve his absence a secret from everybody outdoors the household, even when it means telling apparent and outrageous lies to the likes of, say, a plumber who involves work on a drain at their home. In actual fact, it’s develop into such a taboo matter that Cindy barely appears to grasp what occurred herself.

A well-drawn, well-told advanced household drama considered by the eyes of the youngest participant, Learn how to Draw a Secret is an interesting and in the end uplifting graphic memoir for younger readers. In actual fact, it reads slightly like Chang’s personal intensive reply to the artwork mission the Cindy character is confronted with within the guide, drawing “What Household Means to Me.”
